Aims
At the end of the course, participants will:
- be able to swiftly and reliably analyze a variety of everyday and/or difficult situations that occur in the workplace.
- be able to communicate successfully and effectively with peers, professors, PIs, University management, and students.
- be aware of their role at their workplace and act accordingly.
- know how to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts and how to collaborate confidently in the workplace.
- know how to choose the best means of communication for settling a conflict assertively.
- prevent rather than escalate conflicts.
Content
Participants will:
- reflect on their habitual style of communication and collaboration in their job at a University office or lab.
- identify their favorite role in collaborating with others.
- find out how to make their role consistent with their job description.
- learn effective ways to communicate and deal with peers, PIs, professors, managers, and students at the University.
- improve on their impact on effective and successful collaboration with coworkers, competitors, and superiors.
- learn to accurately gauge the differences between a disagreement and a (perceived) conflict.
- become familiar with the first steps in dealing with a (perceived) conflict in the workplace.
- learn how to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts and collaborate confidently.

30 hrs. including 6-8 hours independent study, preparations
Feature
Registrations will be processed according to a “first come, first served” principle. The course registration will be confirmed by email. The registration to a course makes the participation in the full training mandatory. Course registrations can only be cancelled before the registration period ends (send an email to grace@unibas.ch). Unexcused absence and cancellation of the workshop after the registration deadline leads to a penalty fee of CHF 30.00. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
