    Aims

    The workshop addresses Open Access publishing in the context of Open Science and gives you an overview of the various Open Access models. You will understand what costs are involved in open access publishing and what opportunities and challenges you may face. The workshop also offers the opportunity to ask your own questions from your scientific practice and to exchange ideas with other doctoral candidates and postdocs.

    The workshop addresses:

    • Publication and scientific communication in the digital era
    • Open Access – the idea and recent developments
    • Open Access publishing - from preprint servers to peer reviewed journals and monographies: barriers and possibilities in the context of your career
    • Predatory Journals: what to consider?
    • Costs of publishing and where to get financial support
    • Legal aspects of Open Access publishing

    Methods

    Inputs, group discussion, hands-on activities. The participants will be asked beforehand what kind of needs and interests they have.

    About the Trainer

    Lucy Hindermann (University Library Basel)
    Lucy Hindermann is an academic librarian at Open Science at the University Library of Basel with a main focus on Open Access and Open Publishing. She holds an M.A. in History and Geography of and a Master of Advanced Studies in Information and Library Science.

    Fabian Felder (University Library Basel)
    Fabian Felder is a subject librarian for Art and Architecture History and an academic librarian trainee at Open Science at the University Library of Basel. He holds a PhD in Art History.

    Workload

    Total of 6h (course attendance 5h, individual wrap-up 1h)

    Feature

    Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.

    Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
