    Ziele

    The main purpose of the workshop is to expand supervisors’ repertoire of strategies to make supervision a professional, effective, and enjoyable process. The purpose is also to create a safe space for supervisors to reflect on their role and to exchange experiences with other supervisors at University of Basel.

    • At the end of the workshop, participants have enhanced skills on how to:
    • align expectations with PhD candidates
    • balance private and professional elements in the supervisory relationship
    • support PhD candidates’ ownership of their projects, while ensuring progress and quality,
    • provide constructive feedback,

    Kursinhalte

    The workshop addresses three key supervisory skills:
    1. Process skills, including the ability to establish and maintain constructive work relationships with students, to align expectations early and regularly, to balance conflicting needs, and to plan and monitor progress
    2. Communication skills, including the ability to ask questions that promote independent thinking, and to listen actively and attentively
    3. Text-related skills, including the ability to provide formative feedback that is prioritized, criteria-based, specific, and instructive.

    Form

    The teaching form is highly interactive based on a combination of group work, exercises, plenary discussions, and short research-based lectures.

    Informationen zu den Dozierenden

    Dr. Gitte Wichmann-Hansen is a Professor at University of Agder, Norway and a Senior researcher at Aarhus University, Denmark. She also owns the consultancy Academic Supervision that offers high quality professional training for research supervisors. She is an established researcher within the field of doctoral supervision with 100+ publications on supervision. She has more than 20 years of experience with running workshops for supervisors at all career stages across European Universities.

    Leistungsspektrum / Workload

    Total of 7h

    The course is regarded as passed if the participants are actively engaged throughout the whole workshop day from 9 till 16.

    Besonderheiten

    Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.

    Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
