Ziele
The course aims to provide you with theoretical and practical knowledge about research data management in the humanities and social sciences. At the end of the course you will...
• know and understand basic concepts, methods and tools for RDM and FAIR data with regard to the humanities and social sciences.
• know how to properly plan for RDM from the beginning to the end of your research project.
• know the most important requirements on RDM by research funders.
• be able to apply the gained knowledge to your own research projects and research data.
• know the most important service providers for RDM in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Basel and in Switzerland.
Kursinhalte
The course provides an introduction to the basics of research data management (RDM) and FAIR data for doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences and offers them the opportunity to apply the basics to their own research data.
Participants will be able to familiarize themselves with the basic concepts, methods and tools of RDM. E.g. planning data management and data protection, organizing, documentation and storing data, finding suitable data repositories, publishing, preserving and re-using data. Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained to their own research data, deepen it in exercises and discuss RDM challenges in their projects with experts.
Finally, participants will learn requirements on RDM by research funders, e.g. the SNSF, and get to know important service providers for RDM in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Basel and in Switzerland. E.g. the RDM Network, RISE, the Data Protection Officer, CeDA, DaSCH, FORS, etc.

Voraussetzungen
Participants will need a laptop for some of the exercises. They will be asked to submit subject-specific questions on the topic and information about their research field and type of research data in advance of the course.
Informationen zu den Dozierenden
The Research Data Management Network supports students and researchers at the University of Basel in research data management and consists of various service providers of the university, such as the Research and Infrastructure Support RISE, the Data Protection Officer, the Center for Data Analytics CeDA, the Center for Scientific Computing SciCORE or the University Library.
Leistungsspektrum / Workload
Total of 30 hours (Course attendance 3x 6h, perperatory work 3h, homework 8h, post-processing 1h)
Besonderheiten
This course is reserved for doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Theology.
Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.
Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
