Ziele
The participants will get an overview about the rules of good scientific practice and the handling with cases of scientific misconduct, and they will explore the differences and grey areas of questionable research practice.
The local, national and international regulations and guidelines will be introduced and discussed. It is a goal of the course to create space for reflections about values and attitudes of science and the role of scientists. The participants will learn to develop appropriate solutions for difficult situations in the process of science.
Kursinhalte
The content of the course follows the curriculum “Good Scientific Practice” which was commissioned by and developed in cooperation with the German Research Ombudsman (Ombudsman für die Wissenschaft):
• Definitions of good scientific practice and scientific misconduct
• Degrees and extent of scientific misconduct
• Examples for responsible and irresponsible conduct of research
• Data management
• Authorship and the process of publication
• Mentoring and supervision
• Conflict management: how to deal with scientific misconduct
• Reactions and consequences to scientific misconduct
• Local, national and international guidelines and regulations
Form
• Input by instructor
• Group and plenary discussions, study case
• Structured and problem based group work (small groups)
Active involvement of the participants is requested and welcome (case and plenary discussions, working in small groups, etc.)

Total of 30h (preliminary work 6h, course attendance 16h, follow-up work 8h)
Besonderheiten
Should the covid-19 situation change and we are required to switch to an online format, the course will take place on 29, 30 and 31.01.2025, from 09:00-14:30.
Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.
Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
