The purpose of this course is to raise the awareness on ethics in scientific imaging. What are you allowed to do with your scientific data and when do you cross the border to falsification or fraud?

In most research areas you have to support your findings with images (microscopy, gels, autoradiographs, scans, etc.). By use of image processing programs it is easy to improve the quality of your original pictures. However, there are limits of improving an image and the border to scientific fraud should never be passed. This course will demonstrate what procedures are scientifically sound, what intermediate products you should archive and what you are absolutely not allowed to do with your pictures. Crossing the border to falsification is delicate and staying on legal grounds is not only important for your career but also a question of research ethics.

    • Know the possibilities of image processing

    • Be familiar with guidelines of good imaging practice

    • Learn about different examples from the field

    • Get an overview of recommended software for scientific data

    • Know bad examples – latest cases in misconduct

    • Prevent the worst case: it might happen to you…?
