Description

In the age of AI, clarifying roles and processes is particularly important.
In this workshop you learn about different techniques how to be an effective supervisor in the university setting. We'll cover different approaches to supervision, treating it as a relationship, project, or process. We will discuss how cultural backgrounds impact supervision complexity and reflect on practices to make your role clearer and easier for both you and the students.

Requirements for the issuance of a certificate of completion:

    Aims

    • The participants can analyse supervision from three perspectives: relationship, project, and process.
    • The participants can develop practical skills in task formulation, role definition, and effective guiding.
    • The participants can develop strategies for managing relationships, addressing conflicts, and refining their supervisory roles.

    Content

    In this short course we will approach the supervision process from three different perspectives. The main focus is on the relationship context.

    (1) Project context
    - Project characteristics and outlines
    - Formulating tasks within the (research) project (with a peer feed-back exercise)
    - Roles and functions within the project

    (2) Process context
    - Key features of effective guiding/supervising processes
    - Providing feedback (with a role play exercise)

    (3) Relationship context
    - Framework for role conflicts, role overlaps, role diversity (with a exercise on supervisors’ responsibilities)
    - Defining one's role
    - Problem-solving strategies

    Target Group

    Members of the University of Basel (including PhD students and lecturers that habilitate at the University of Basel) with at least Master Degree who are involved in undergraduate teaching of the University of Basel

    Classes on-site: 6.5 hours
    Proof of performance: 2 hours
