Designing digital activities for student engagement (24HS7012) ONLINE

Description

Digital learning is now an established part of many courses at the University of Basel. Since the Covid-19 pandemic we share many positive experiences of learning and teaching online. We are also developing staff and student digital literacies through our Basel Digital Literacy Framework. However, we know it can be difficult to engage students online, both in synchronous and asynchronous settings, and to support the learning of complex ideas and challenging issues.

This course builds on the skills you already have to promote active learning online, and to help students develop critical thinking and sound academic skills. It covers
• how students learn in synchronous and asynchronous digital settings,
• activities in large and small groups,
• dealing with students’ diverse motivations and learning preferences,
• supporting students’ critical thinking and academic skills through the use of digital tools.

The course will encourage discussion and sharing of ideas with colleagues. You will reflect on your own teaching practice and experiences. To pass the course you will produce a new learning activity or session for your students, and a reflective piece in any shareable medium (digital text, video, audio, infographic, animation).

The course will take place online, using our learning platform ADAM and the videoconferencing software Zoom. It will feature two live, online, synchronous meetings with two weeks of online activities between the meetings. The focus will be on discussing and developing pedagogy, not on learning new tools, but you will be encouraged to try new tools if they are relevant to your teaching practice.
