    Aims

    Publishing research articles in peer-reviewed journals is a demanding task. It is a task sometimes rewarding and sometimes frustrating. As publishing is a prerequisite for a career in science, it is important to approach the topic strategically.

    The aims of this course are: (1) to understand steps in the publication process, (2) to realise interests of involved stakekolders (e.g. editors, publishing houses), (3) to know ethical standards, (4) to develop individual publishing strategies.

    • the peer review system: stakeholders, processes, benefits, criticism
    • criteria for journal selection (e.g. journal reputation, decision time)
    • publishing in open access journals
    • what editors want
    • what reviewers do
    • how to write a review report by yourself
    • what to do in case of rejection
    • authorship
    • ethical obligations
    • copyright issues

    Methods

    Short lectures provide information and tips; extended exercises help to develop individual strategies. Participants gather and share experiences. They focus on their own publication projects and balance pros and cons of different target journals.In addition to the workshop, a coaching session is offered (45 minutes, more information on March 16).

    Doctoral Candidates in the life sciences or natural sciences

    About the Trainer

    Dr. Philipp Mayer qualified in geoecology and obtained a PhD in the field of biodiversity research. He works as a freelance consultant and holds lectureships from the ETH Zurich and the Universities of Basel and Zurich. Dr. Mayer has held many writing courses and is the author of two books about scientific writing.

    Feature

    This course is in collaboration with the Advanced Studies and free of charge for doctoral candidates of the University of Basel. For this workshop unexcused absence and cancellation of the workshop less than five working days prior the training leads to a penatly fee of CHF 160.00.
    Registrations will be processed according on a “first come, first served” principle. The course registration will be confirmed by email. The registration to a course makes the participation in the full training mandatory. A course can be cancelled up to five working days before its scheduled date (send an email to grace@unibas.ch). Participants failed to attend a course for which they registered, remaining absent form a course without an excuse or cancel less than five working days in advance will be excluded from the transferable skills programme for the following semester.
