Peer Observation (25F05005)

Description

Peer observations are an immediate and highly effective method for assessing the effectiveness of one's own teaching. This course introduces the process and provides practical exercises using video examples to practice both observing various teaching situations and providing constructive feedback. The course is designed to prepare participants to independently conduct collegial observations.

The course consists of two on-site meetings and an implementation phase:

  1. On-site meeting: Introduction and preparation
  2. Intermediate phase: Conducting a collegial observation
  3. On-site meeting: Evaluating results and debriefing
  4. Proof of performance

Requirements for the issuance of a certificate of completion:
- Minimum attendance time at the class: 80%
- Proof of performance: Observation report (evaluation criteria: change of perspective, operationalization of teaching goals, separation of description and evaluation, formal aspects)

    Aims

    • Participants will be familiar with the basic principles of collegial observation and able to attentively observe teaching situations.
    • Participants can identify strengths and areas for improvement in university teaching situations and providing constructive feedback.
    • Participants can professionally conduct peer observations.

    Content

    This course provides a comprehensive overview of peer observation at the University of Basel.
    Initially, it explores the integration of collegial observation in comparison to other feedback sources. The course addresses setting individual goals, focus areas for observation, and observation briefing.
    Utilizing video feedback and role plays allows participants to practice giving feedback.
    Between the two course days, engaging in personal observations in both roles – as observer and observed – along with subsequent discussions, provides practical insights into teaching practices.
    The course concludes with a reflection on reporting, focusing on the development of teaching quality.

    Target Group

    Members of the University of Basel with at least Master Degree, who are involved in undergraduate teaching of the University of Basel, as well as PhD students and lecturers that habilitate at the University of Basel
