Aims
What is Ethics of Science? Why is ethical reflection essential to scientific research? What does responsible research mean? Do the principles of research ethics apply to all disciplines? Is research ethics a limit to, or a condition for academic freedom? How can ethical issues and risks be assessed and mitigated?
This interdisciplinary workshop is a general introduction to the main principles, concepts and issues in ethics of science. The workshop provides case studies and hands-on experiences, aiming to raise awareness among the participants on issues of e.g. professional and social responsibility, scientific good practices, as well as research with human and non-human subjects. During the workshop, participants will also have many opportunities for discussing interactively concrete ethical problems and applying it to their own discipline.

About the Trainer
Dr. Isabelle Wienand is managing director of the University Ethics Committee and lecturer in research ethics at the University of Basel. She has an extensive teaching and research experience in the field of modern moral philosophy and medical ethics in Swiss universities (Fribourg, Lausanne and Basel), and abroad (Netherlands and South Africa). Her scientific publications are in the fields of moral philosophy and medical ethics.

Workload
- Total workload: 30 hours
- Course Attendance: 16 hours (4 x 4h)
- Preparatory work: 4x2.5 hours
- Assignment: 4 hours
Feature
Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.
Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
