Aims
• Increased awareness of symptoms signaling stage fright (development of an "early warning system")
• Basic competence in using different approaches to deal with stage fright
• Improved ability to radiate confidence and competence nonverbally
• Development of a repertoire of simple relaxation exercises
Content
Performance situations can be particularly challenging on both the psychological and physical levels, a challenge that sometimes makes it difficult to fully achieve one’s personal potential. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the acquired skills can also be reliably accessed in a high-stakes situation – ideally, transforming stage fright into performance-enhancing energy. This course offers a diverse range of easy-to-learn and scientifically proven methods for coping effectively with the challenges of performance. Topics include:
• Types of stage fright
• Approaches to dealing with stage fright (physical, cognitive, mental, etc.)
• Exercises for optimizing muscle tension
• Three distinct phases of performance situations
• Creating one’s own personal anxiety management plan
Methods
A combination of input from the instructor and active participatory phases (individual work, pair work and group activities).
Target Group
All Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs
(This course is aimed at doctoral candidates and postdocs who wish to improve their skills in managing stress under performance conditions (e.g., when giving academic presentations or defending their dissertation, etc.).)
