    Aims

    By the end of the course participants will be able to:
    • understand the fundamentals of presenting with an assessment of each person's unique presentation style
    • plan a well-structured presentation and poster appropriate to their discipline
    • deliver the presentation confidently and effectively
    • handle questions and elicit feedback efficiently
    • assess their own presentation skills and give constructive feedback to others
    • acquire relevant skills for physically and online present talks
    • set aims for further development based on different kinds of feedback and perceptional training.

    Content

    How do you present your research projects professionally and comprehensively at conferences? Giving an appealing and interesting talk or presenting an attractive poster can be an important factor when it comes to getting your research recognized.
    This course will cover rhetorical and visual presentation skills for onsite and online talks, focusing on the awareness of one’s own style, strengths and weaknesses. Participants will have to practice a presentation of about 10 minutes plus discussion, which will be filmed. Additional practical parts and exercises will be offered.
    Feedback on the posters and presentations is carried out throughout the course by self-assessment, group analysis and lecturer review.

    Methods

    Participants will be expected to:
    • fill in a short questionnaire before the beginning of the course, giving some information about their background knowledge and current presentation skills
    • prepare and hand in their presentation a few days prior to the first course day
    • give a 10-minute-presentation followed by questions and discussion (1st day)
    • develop and present a poster for practice about a preferred research subject (2nd day)

    The presentations and posters address an audience of the participants’ research area.

    Target Group

    All doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Science

    Requirements

    Participants will be expected to:
    • fill in a short questionnaire before the beginning of the course, giving some information about their background knowledge and presentations they have given or will be giving in the near future
    • prepare and hand in a presentation a few days prior to the first course day
    • give a 10 minutes presentation in class followed by questions
    • develop a poster for practice (about a chosen subject of their research)

    The presentations and posters address a specialized public of the participants’ research area.

    About the Trainer

    Dr. Anja Janoschka is qualified in communication and marketing, and a coach in self-marketing, academic and professional presentation skills. She is responsible for the Major Marketing (BA) at HSLU-W, senior researcher in various funded projects in communication, social media, persuasion, and digital marketing, and has worked in further education for many years. Anja did her PhD on Web Advertising at the University of Zurich.Web Advertising at the University of Zurich.

    Feature

    This course is reserved for doctoral candidates of the Faculy of Science.

    Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.

    Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
