    Aims

    At the end of the course, participants will:
    - be able to swiftly and reliably analyze a variety of every day or difficult situations in the
    workplace.
    - be able to communicate successfully and effectively with peers, professors, PIs, University management,
    and students.
    - be aware of their role at their workplace and act accordingly.
    - know how to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts and how to collaborate confidently in the
    workplace.
    - know how to choose the best communication means for assertively settling a conflict.
    Finally, prevent rather than escalate conflicts.

    Content

    Participants will:
    - reflect on their typical communication and collaboration style in their job at a university office or lab.
    - identify their favorite role in collaborating with others.
    - find out how to make their role consistent with their job description.
    - learn effective ways to communicate and deal with peers, PIs, professors, managers, and students at the
    University.
    - improve their impact on practical and successful collaboration with coworkers, competitors, and
    superiors.
    - learn to accurately gauge the differences between a disagreement and a (perceived) conflict.
    - become familiar with the first steps in dealing with a (perceived) conflict in the workplace.
    - learn how to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts and collaborate confidently.

    International doctoral students and postdocs who use English as the main language at work.

    Workload

    30 hrs. (21 hrs. course attendance, plus 9 hrs. independent study, preparations or workshop assignments)

    Feature

    Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.

    Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
