    Aims

    The end of your doctorate is approaching or you would like to consider possible career steps at an early stage during your PhD. Questions arise such as:
    - Does it make sense for me to focus on an academic career?
    - Am I suitable for a professorship?
    - Are there alternatives to an academic career and what do they look like?

    This workshop offers you an insight in different career types, work areas and the possibility to reflect on your skills profile, taking into account job profiles.

    In the second part of the workshop, you will get the opportunity to perform an elevator pitch as preparation for forthcoming situations, e.g. career events with companies, job interviews, meetings with potential employers, networking at conferences.

    Content

    The participants
    - learn about different career types and work areas (examples of biographies)
    - compare different working areas and will be able to see the differences between them
    - reflect on their skills profile and draw conclusions about requirements of possible jobs

    Þ How does a competence profile appear in the CV
    Þ Outline the own skills profile

    Methods

    Inputs, individual work, exchange in groups
    Practice an elevator pitch (short presentation in groups)
    An active participation of the participants is desired.

    About the Trainer

    Dagmar Engfer, MSc Geography, Coach and Consultant for Career Development, Leadership and Team Development, Certified Member of BSO (Berufsverband für Coaching, Supervision und Organisationsberatung), Lecturer and Trainer at universities and in different organisations and companies.

    Workload

    Total of 12h (2x 4h course attendance, 4h preparation)

    Feature

    Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours and course places allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24h period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first come, first served basis.

    Course places/places on the waiting list will be confirmed by e-mail. Course registrations can only be canceled before the registration period ends (send an e-mail to grace@unibas.ch). Full course attendance is mandatory. Participants who fail to attend a course without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee of CHF 30. In addition, participants who cancel their course registration at a later point in time, are absent without an excuse or do not attend the entire course will, for reasons of fairness, not be considered for course registration in the following semester and will be removed from other courses offered in the same semester.
